Meat Update – March 2016

There are things that change in life, and then there are things that stay the same. The humidity in Queensland at this time of year is the same as it was last year, and the year before that, however the market is quite different and the economic landscape has changed vastly over the past 12 months.

Given the staggering number of cattle slaughtered in 2015, the next two years are set to be very lean when it comes to processing numbers and the MLA has forecast a drop in the national kill of approximately 40 000 head (less) per week. This is an incredible figure and the national herd will go into a replenishment phase. As a result, it may be some time before we see some sustainable figures.

Right now, we are seeing a lot of the major processors ease back on their operational days to allow for this reduction in available livestock numbers. What this means for the domestic market is that prices will more than likely stay firm for the time being. The benchmark for most items was set last year and this will continue for the remainder of 2016.

This month we will continue with Beef Cube Rolls (#36866) on special at $15.99/kg which are versatile enought to cut into steak sandwich or a sensational Roast for your buffet.

Also, exciting news from our NEW Prime Pasture range, where the team have been busy creating a new product – seasoned beef mince, ready to use for any Beef Mince applications. Whether it is meatballs, pasta, chilli con carne, or koftas; there are four different flavours for you to try.

As we are approaching an early Easter, the market is remaining quite solid and flock numbers are being reported as lighter than last year. With the shift away from some beef protein items, this will mean that the market will remain strong until Winter, where we will likely experience a kick and possible increases. For now, we are holding where possible, however, talk to you Prime Foodservice Meat Specialist for all or any of your lamb needs.

The pork market is still quite solid overall for this time of the year despite Chinese New Year coming and going. The good news is that there is likely to be some relief in the price items such as Pork Legs And Pork Bellies in the coming months. How much price relief, we’re not certain of, but it is our intention to pass on the savings as soon as they become available. This month in our Easter catalogue, we are offering our popular Pork Schnitzel (#28063) at $13.99/kg. These are lightly crumbed and weighing in at approximately 200g each, and is a must for your next “Schnitzel Night”!

Did You Know?

There is no real traditional meat dish served at Easter, although being on a Sunday, it draws Western influences from a typical “Sunday Roast” which could be lamb, beef or even pork.

However, for Orthodox churches, the feast is normally comprised of a small lamb roasted whole. Many Orthodox churches base their Easter date on the Julian calendar, which differs from the Gregorian calendar that is used by many Western countries.

Therefore, the Orthodox Easter period often occurs later than the Easter period that falls around the time of the March equinox. This year, the Orthodox Easter is Sunday May 1st. The day is known as Pascha, as well as the Sunday of the Ressurection.
