August Meat Market Report

August Meat Market Report

BEEF:

With more than half of the 2017 calendar down, we begin heading into the pointy end of the year. The fiscal year is over and soon the Winter woolies will find their way back into storage. The Queensland “Winter” if you could call it, is all but over with glorious sunshine and crisp nights forecast for most of August.

Out in the markets, the raging AUD$ closing at $0.80 seems to be impacting slightly on cattle slaughter along with the herd rebuilding phase resulting in lower slaughter numbers across the board by an average -1.5%YTD. A resulting tough international market has sent processor margins tumbling unexpectedly. This may put pressure on some processors to perhaps close for a week or so in the coming Spring to slow down the influx of product coming onto the domestic market.

On the foodservice scene, some operators are reporting a slowing down in trade, however as always; there is renewed optimism especially in South East Queensland, where both the Brisbane Ekka and regional shows entice consumers out of the cold. The MLA has also launched a new campaign to help push sales through the retail sector.

And so onto this month’s specials, we have managed to source a limited supply of Grain Fed Cube Rolls (#28673). These are 100 day Grain Fed MSA, sourced from the Diamantina range from Stanbroke at Grantham. At $27.49/Kg, these will be popular and it would be wise to strike now.

From our MOCO Meats butchery team, we are offering our ever popular Beef Rost Biff (Rump) 180g Steak (#40313). These are derived from Grain Fed 100 day local cattle and make a very lean and tasty lunch steak. At $3.11 each, these are a great option for your gill menu.

LAMB:

Lamb numbers are beginning to build in some states with a reported increase of 19% up on 2016 levels and a 3% increase over the 5 year average. This has been due mainly to a lower than average rainfall in July in the lamb producing regions.

Export demand has slightly slowed down also, which will hopefully allow for some short lived reprieve of available product on the domestic market. To help things along, we have a great supply of Lamb Rump Cap Off (#18001) on special at $17.99/Kg. Lamb Rumps are very versatile and underrated as a grilling cut so why not put them on your menu today.

PORK:

Industry pundits are still reporting big stock numbers in chilled and more prominently frozen stocks of various pork cuts across the industry. Slaughter number are up and especially the numbers of breeding sows, which is continuing to put pressure on processors to lower prices even further.

This month, MOCO Meats is proud to release a NEW brand on to the market. Working with a local processor, MOCO Meats is pleased to offer the Apple Tree Pork range of products.
